Atsuya Fujito
A community-based family doctor who closely supports women throughout their life stages

My primary aim as an obstetrician/gynecologist is to help women so that they can be radiant regardless of their age. While pregnancy and childbirth are both significant milestones for women, minor conditions or concerns specific to women can occur at any time. As a community-based family doctor, I provide care to improve such issues, as well as support women throughout their life stages to help them be radiant at all times. My clinic is bright and open because I believe those who wish to receive treatment should be able to visit us with peace of mind. I continue to improve our organization to foster lasting relationships with patients.

Hoping to reduce the number of women who put up with pain

The number of obstetrics and gynecology clinics is decreasing with the low birthrate. I believe that it has become more important for obstetricians and gynecologists to be able to deal with a wide range of conditions. Our mission is to support women throughout their life stages, help them enjoy good health and to be radiant as long as possible. In addition to pregnancy and childbirth, both significant milestones for women, we provide care to improve conditions or health issues specific to women, such as menstrual disorders and uterine cancer. We decided not to specialize in a particular field so that we could deal with a wide range of issues. We continue to make great efforts to broaden the scope of treatment we can offer. Nevertheless, we are unable to provide care unless patients decide to visit us. I am aware that many hesitate to see an obstetrician/gynecologist. People should be able to walk in here with peace of mind, and this is the reason why I decided to make this clinic as welcoming as possible. I eliminated potential barriers, both physical and mental. Staff members are easy to talk to, and the walls of the waiting room are made of glass so that patients can get a feel for the atmosphere of the clinic. Our clinic truly embodies its mission: Help women appear radiant as long as possible.

As the owner of a clinic, I firmly believe that medical institutions also need to pursue work style reform. I increased the number of full-time doctors to five, based on the thinking that good working arrangements not only benefit doctors themselves but also patients. Three out of our five doctors are women. I ensure that our working environment allows them to build their careers and support their families simultaneously.
Japan is unusual owing to its comparatively high incidence of cervical cancer. A low screening rate contributes to the prevalence. Women in their 30s and 40s are most frequently diagnosed with cervical cancer. It is a type of cancer more common among young adults. When identified early, cervical cancer is more likely to be treated successfully. The detection rates of cervical cancer tests are high. Precancerous lesions (conditions that are at an increased risk of developing into cancer) are very likely to be able to be detected. This is precisely why it is crucial for women to start seeing an obstetrician/gynecologist on a regular basis from their 20s for screening tests. Regular screening tests lead to early detection. It also creates opportunities to get to know your own body. I know many women simply put up and live with menstrual pain. Those who put up with pain and try to carry on often develop conditions specific to women. Worrying about such conditions alone must be agonizing. I strongly encourage those with concerns to come and talk with us. Trying to establish what is causing the condition and helping the patient understand is the first step. Only when medical necessity arises, we try to improve the condition by prescribing medication. I am determined to help reduce the number of women who put up with pain. My role, which I am prepared to perform throughout my career, is to come up with a support system necessary to help those women and introduce it to them. I am constantly dedicated to making improvements, because I am not yet satisfied with the present situation.
I don't want to miss any opportunity to hear from patients. I continue to refine our organization so that those who wish to receive treatment can visit with peace of mind. We closely support women throughout their life stages before, during and after pregnancy and childbirth, hoping to foster lasting relationships with them. We are proud to be able to act as family doctors who provide women in the community with quality care.
