Independent, autonomous staff bring reassurance and happiness

We are a clinic managed under the philosophy of delivering reassurance and happiness to all people. Medical practice is not the only means of making people happy. We believe we can reassure people and ensure happiness by approaching people in various ways, including education and connection with the community. In this sense, we would like to be a business as well as a medical institution. It is our goal to be a venture business managing a clinic that responds to changes in trends and challenges itself.

Having recognized the importance of community healthcare as a trainee doctor, I have worked on home care for 20 years. In 2013 I started a practice after working for hospitals such as Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital. Since then, I have tried to devote myself to community healthcare in Suginami, Tokyo by proactively participating in community events and interacting with community members to develop close ties. In particular, with home care, we support the entire family, caregivers as well as patients, because we cannot make house calls if a caregiver becomes fatigued and unable to care for a patient. However, as a small clinic that is not specialized in home care, it is difficult for us to visit patients immediately, even if we are able to answer emergency phone calls. Therefore, it is very important to build close relationships with the community to avoid mismatches through the development of a full understanding of our idea and system, and to understand what kind of healthcare the community wants.
That is why I first aimed to listen to, satisfy, and surpass patients' needs when opening the clinic. I wanted to make us a clinic that reassured patients by offering more patient-oriented healthcare than they expected. However, the number of patients increased and exceeded our capacity. As a result, the staff became exhausted. We did appreciate the patients’ confidence, however, I realized we would not meet patients' needs unless I respected the reassurance and happiness of our staff first. Last year (2018), we upgraded our philosophy: to be a business that reassures and delivers happiness to all people. It is based on the thinking that happiness does not always mean being healthy. People interpret reassurance and happiness differently. We may reassure more people and bring them happiness if we can build and maintain a win-win relationship with everyone the clinic interacts with. To accomplish this, we should constantly think about how to realize it, try new things, and operate the clinic while correcting direction. The reason we call ourselves a venture business managing a clinic is that we want to share this management vision with our staff and grow together.
The contributions of our staff are indispensable to the growth of the clinic. I show them the ideal work attitude and try to create an environment that allows them to grow as long as they make effort, not just telling them how to do the work. I feel that each of the staff members has developed: more staff can share what they have learned with others and have the pleasure of passing on knowledge and skill. Now I seldom need to give them instructions anymore. The staff is autonomous and independent enough to devise measures to enhance employee satisfaction and put them into practice. Growth and development are always accompanied by difficulties, but, if you overcome them, you will grow. Failure is a better teacher than success. My role is to approve and support the challenges of each staff member. I aim to make our clinic the best in Japan in terms of staff training to the extent that job seekers believe they can develop here and want to work for our clinic.
Generally, and at our clinic as well, patients tend to place more importance on doctors when choosing a medical institution, and reliable medical doctors are the main factor in their reassurance and happiness. In spite of this, we believe we will reassure and provide happiness to more patients if our nurses and other staff can continuously ensure quality service and hospitality to enable medical doctors to concentrate on medical care. Hopefully, the staff's spirit of autonomy and independence will lead to the creation of a branch clinic, even if that initiative isn’t proposed by me. I'm expecting our staff to propose the opening of a branch clinic and undertake its management to proceed to the next stage after learning fully at the main clinic. I would like to take a number of measures and get ready for overseas expansion while understanding the moves by the country and government, and anticipate the future so that the staff can work for the clinic long-term.
