Aim to become the world's best orthodontist

We are a dental clinic specializing in correcting teeth alignment. All of our doctors are orthodontist specialists, who provide free alignment correction consultation and thorough informed consent, and provide treatments that fully satisfy our patients. I took over this clinic from my father at the age of 30 and have served as the director to this day. What I have always prioritized all this time is to stay true to my Japanese spirit and provide "hospitality". Specifically, I try to provide hospitality which takes all five senses into account.

For example, we take various measures such as playing relaxing music that is good to the ear, periodically replacing fresh flowers to cater to sight, and providing fragrances with a relaxing effect by aromas, to name a few. Instructions to the staff can also become noise, so we strictly make sure our staff use intercoms when sharing information with one another. In addition, by acquiring and implementing ISO9001 which is the world common standard, we strive to maintain the quality of our clinic in the form of certification from a third party.

We also deeply care about our staff's appearance. Not only should the hospital be neatly organized, the appearance of our staff must also be neat in order to leave a good impression. We are also strict about the colors of their hair and nails, and instruct them to "make sure they come with a neat appearance, even if they oversleep".We take care of our staff as well as our patients. We provide great working conditions such as salary and paid leave, and we also plan to renovate the clinic next year. Also, since our workplace is one comprised of mainly female staff, we are also considering making a women's dormitory so that even those living alone can feel completely safe.

Regarding our stance towards work, I always try to be "perfect" and "to be number one". I've always been serious when saying, "If you're going to do your job, you might as well aim to be the best orthodontist in the world." I've always considered what is needed to make our patients, who entrust us with expensive treatments, feel most comfortable when under our care. And I think that the answers to that are "the best treatment", "comfortable space", and "thorough service". It is a given that we can provide thorough corrective treatment. In addition, we also provide our best version of hospitality, but we hope to be able to make improvements as soon as we find areas that we can change.

Also, because we care about treatment and communication, we do not place much emphasis on revenue. I focus on first providing the best service, such as by trying to remember our patients' birthday as much as possible, and then look at our sales later. Even in that sense, a financial statement is like a report card of our clinic. Some people initially laughed at my goal of "aiming to become the world's best orthodontist". However, as have gradually displayed our great quality of treatment and hospitality, more people take our goal seriously now.

A policy I always keep in mind is to "be fully prepared and determined to live each day". The management of the clinic was not always a smooth sail. We initially struggled, and I only made it this far by tackling each obstacle one at a time, while also receiving support from my wife. I try not to worry about the past or to imagine what the future holds without grounds, and think that "I have no choice but to live by accruing experiences in the present". In addition, daily challenges are important. With challenge comes guaranteed failures, but I think that it is important to think about why you failed and how you can use that experience, rather than dwelling on it. That's because how we think and our values are made of accumulations of ideas and experiences of the past, which also lead to future development.

There are many other clinics that introduce our clinic, so we strive to not forget our feeling of gratitude, and to not embarrass ourselves with poor treatments. We will not be content with simply being in the dental industry, but instead continue to collect new information to broaden our horizon, such as by talking to doctors in other fields or people in other industries altogether. In the future, jobs for orthodontists may decrease with the development of AI, but at the end I think that human hands and eyes will always be necessary. Robots do not have emotions and cannot reason, and if I were in need of surgery I would definitely want a fellow person to handle the surgery. I think AI is a tool, and must remain a tool. I hope to always keep this in mind while I continue to better services which can only be provided by humans.
